On November 14, 1971, 23-year-old Eileen “Gail” McCarthy left her basement apartment at 118 Ave. and 124 St. in Edmonton, Alberta, to catch the bus to the Misericordia Hospital, where she worked as a medical technician.

At around 6:30 a.m., Gail—who was three to four months pregnant—boarded the bus a block away from her home. She was wearing a brown and white coat with a white fur collar, a brown shoulder purse and white hospital stockings. According to an excerpt from Deadly Encounters: True Crime Stories of Alberta, she was wearing a uniform that resembled that of a nurse’s.
