He would call his mother if he wouldn’t be home for supper. Those who knew him described him as “being of good character,” and a “very conscientious person,” with no reason to walk away from his life in Abbotsford, British Columbia.
On Sunday, October 17, 1982 - the day before his 26th birthday - Clayton played a few hands of poker with friends after finishing his shift as dispatcher at Abbotsford Taxi. Ltd. According to another company dispatcher and cab driver, Ron Johnston, there was nothing unusual about Bussiere. "He was laughing and joking just like normal,” Johnston later said in a Vancouver Sun article.
October 17, 1982
That evening, between 5 and 5:30 p.m., Bussiere was down a couple of dollars in the penny ante game. When it was over, he left in his cab and personal vehicle – a robin egg blue four-door 1978 Pontiac Grand Le Mans - apparently heading home.
According to police at the time, “a few hours later” in Mission, B.C., another cab driver said he was having a late lunch at the Hi-Lite Burger Bar - a diner on Lougheed Highway (Highway 7) - when he saw Clayton Bussiere drive past the diner in his cab.
There was a passenger in the front seat.
The Second Sighting
At around 7 p.m., the cab driver saw Bussiere drive by again. This time, apparently, there was no passenger.
Investigators say it remains “unclear” as to whether or not there was.
What Happened to Clayton Bussiere?
Whoever was sitting beside Clayton Mark Bussiere in his cab that evening has remained silent for 38 years.
The sighting of Clayton Bussiere, driving east toward downtown Mission for reasons unknown, was the last time anyone reported seeing Clayton and his cab before they vanished.
The Hi-Lite Burger Bar is approximately 12.3 km from Abbotsford Taxi Ltd., or about a 14 minute drive. If Clayton wasn’t working, what was he doing in those hours before he was last seen? When did he pick up a passenger, and why?
Following his disappearance, Clayton’s family and friends consulted psychics and searched isolated roads, abandoned buildings and the dense woods in Abbotsford and the surrounding areas, searching for answers in a situation impossible to comprehend. Cab drivers in Abbotsford and adjacent municipalities kept watch for Clayton’s cab. They called for Clayton on their radios. There was nothing but silence.
There has been no sign of Clayton nor seen his vehicle since that Sunday evening in 1982.
Clayton Mark Bussiere is described as 6’1” tall and has a one inch scar on his forehead. He was wearing a grey cardigan with elbow patches, a black digital watch, and a necklace with a pendant of Saint Christopher – the patron saint of travel. He was also wearing navy blue corduroy pants and jockey underwear.
The four-door 1978 Pontiac Grand Le Mans has a British Columbia licence plate number 1931-JB. It also has a Washington State plate on the front end, with the number 1030. The cab has “Abbottsford Taxi” and the number “6” painted on the rear roof panel. The interior of the car is dark blue velour.
Clayton and his cab didn’t simply vanish. Someone knows what happened.
