Carol May Big Tobacco (Cat Face)

Missing since March 19, 1983
Siksika First Nation, Alberta
Age at disappearance: 8

There is only one photo of Carol Big Tobacco. There is no way of knowing what the girl from Siksika First Nation, Alberta, looked like when she disappeared on March 19, 1983, at eight years old. She was last seen near Bow River in Gleichen, when she reportedly wandered away from her babysitter at her family’s residence.

Carol wasn’t reported missing until three years later, on November 25, 1986

October 19, 1989

On October 19, 1989, the Calgary Herald reported the discovery of a child’s remain close to the place where Carol was last seen. In the article, Carol’s father, Albert Cat Face said the reason for the delay in reporting her missing was “confusion” about her whereabouts during those three years.

Carol’s parents had struggled with “domestic problems,” and she was known to have been in and out of care with a different family on the reserve. Her parents believed she’d been “placed in a home,” but her foster family believed Carol had been with one of her birth parents.

One of Carol’s boots was discovered some time after her disappearance, but the remains of the child that was found in 1989 could never be positively identified as Carol’s.

At the time, her father said he was satisfied that she was found. In the same 1989 article, her mother Joan declined an interview. Her father’s 2007 obituary says he was predeceased by Carol.

Carol - also known has Carol Cat Face - may have been disabled, according to her NCMPUR profile. She was wearing a brown nylon jacket when she disappeared. Carol is still classified as missing. She would now be 46 years old.
