In 2004, Corey Shane Braun was 24 years old. He lived and worked in Fort St. John, B.C., as an oil field operator for Penn West (re-named Obsidian Energy Ltd. in 2017) – a mid-sized oil and natural gas production company based in Calgary, Alberta.
On November 20, 2004, he made the three-hour drive to Peace River, Alberta, for the staff Christmas party at the Peace Valley Inns – a 90 room hotel with three buildings, a restaurant and a bar. That night, he was wearing blue jeans, a light blue denim jacket, a white t-shirt and black Roper cowboy boots.
The exact details of happened after the party are unclear.
When it ended, Corey walked with his friends and fellow Penn West employees to a nearby gas station called the 12 Foot Davis Center (now called Centex Peace River). It was about a six-minute walk from the hotel.
While there, they were involved in a “minor altercation,” according to the RCMP.
At 3:00 a.m., on November 21, 2004, Corey separated from the group at the south entrance of the hotel. His friends saw him walking toward his room. It is unknown if Corey ever made it inside.
He was never seen again.
